The Government Shutdown: Furloughed Employees
As the longest federal government shutdown in history continues, federal workers are struggling to make ends meet and keep their families afloat. According to EDD there are approximately 245,000 federal employees living in California alone. EDD has seen a 600% increase in unemployment applications from federal employees since December 29th of 2018.
If you are a federal employee who has been furloughed due to the government shutdown, you can print the following application and mail or fax to EDD to begin your unemployment claim.
Communities Offering “Freebies”
Some companies are using the government shutdown as an opportunity to provide added benefits to federal employees. Some companies are calling them “furlough freebies” or “shutdown specials”. Many wireless communication companies are waiving late fees and providing extensions.
Free Services
Many restaurants, including five-star chef Jose Andres are offering free meals to federal employees. In addition, some movie theaters are offering free movies and concessions to federal workers who show their government ID. You can even get a free three-month subscription with Rosetta Stone.
