Financial Abuse
Tennis star Serena Williams has taken to the podium to bring awareness to a side of domestic violence that is rarely discussed. Serena is an ambassador for Purple Purse which is a foundation that was created to help survivors recover from financial abuse.
Purple Purse released statistics that one in four women will be affected by domestic violence at some point in their lives. Of those women, 99% will suffer some form of financial abuse.
The foundation is trying to raise awareness of certain tactics that abusers may take to prevent independence and exert an added layer of control over their victims. Some of those tactics include: not allowing women to work, checking receipts of all purchases, running up debt or opening accounts in the victim’s name, and blocking off access to credit cards or bank accounts.
Financial abuse is often the primary factor preventing women from leaving violent situations at home. This level of monitoring and control is what prevents many victims from saving the money needed to escape the environment, rebuild credit and pay off debt, and afford legal fees once victims are able to leave.
