California Eviction Relief Bill
On August 31st, Governor Newsom signed a Coronavirus eviction relief bill. The bill aids Californians who have not paid rent since March 1st due to the virus stay in their homes until January 31st. In order for a tenant to qualify for this protection, they have to have paid at least 25% of their rent during this period. However, this legislation does not forgive any of these missed payments, and tenants are still required to pay the missed rent in full.
In addition, this bill does not provide any protection to landlords that are facing foreclosure whose tenants have stopped paying rent. Some California legislators are vowing to write a new bill including tax breaks for landlords whose tenants have paid 25% of their rent.
