What To Expect During Pre-bankruptcy Credit Counseling
Before anyone can file for bankruptcy, they must attend a credit counseling course with an provider approved by the US Bankruptcy Courts. Upon completion of this credit counseling course, you receive a bankruptcy certificate which must be filed with the court. Here’s what you can expect during the pre-bankruptcy credit counseling.
Credit Counseling Certificate
The initial credit counseling course focuses on bankruptcy and alternatives to bankruptcy so that you understand the bankruptcy process from start to finish, as well as other options you have such as debt consolidation and debt assistance programs. The credit counseling course isn’t difficult, takes 60 to 90 minutes, and can be done in person, on the phone, or online. During the class you will provide information about your finances in an effort to determine whether bankruptcy is really the best option for you.
Finding and Paying for Credit Counseling
Fees for pre-bankruptcy credit counseling depends on which agency you choose but generally, cost between $15 and $50 dollars. The credit counseling provider I refer my clients to charges $14.95.
